Can Ukrainian citizens enter Denmark without a visa?

Yes, under the provisions of the temporary residence law for persons who have been displaced from Ukraine.

The condition is for the individual to have a biometric passport, issued after 12 January 2015. If this is not possible, the person can apply for a short-term visa.

If you wish to immigrate to Denmark from Ukraine, applying for a short-term visa can be the first step if you do not meet the requirements concerning the biometric passport.

As highlighted herein, Ukrainian nationals can stay in the country for 90 days or can choose to remain in the country lawfully, based on a Danish residence permit that is awarded to them under a special act. How long can I remain in Denmark?

When entering the country under the visa-free regime or with a short-term visa, the individual can remain in the country for no more than 90 days in a 180-day period.

The visa-free stay can be extended for another 90 days. This can be the case of Ukrainian citizens who are not able to leave and return safely to their country after the initial 90 days have passed.

Can I obtain a residence permit for Denmark?

Yes, it is possible to apply for a residence permit under the Special Act if:

  • You are a Ukrainian citizen;
  • You are a recognized refugee in Ukraine;
  • You are the family member of a person in Denmark displaced from Ukraine;
  • You are displaced from Ukraine and staying in the Faroe Islands.

The following conditions also apply:

  • the applicant is a Ukrainian citizen who left Ukraine on 24 February 2022 or after this date;
  • the applicant is a Ukrainian citizen or a recognized refugee in Ukraine on 24 February 2022;
  • the temporary residence permit is valid until 17 March 2024.

If is useful to note that an applicant cannot receive a permanent residence permit based on the clauses that allow for the possibility to apply for a temporary residence permit under the Special Act.

Acquiring a permanent residence permit in Denmark is possible once the individual has been living in the country for 8 or more years (or only 4 years in some cases).

Other important information

Individuals who remain in the country under the Special Act can receive accommodation in an asylum center. However, they can also choose to remain with friends or family.
